HEART OF LA DEMOCRATIC CLUB ENDORSES AURA VASQUEZ FOR LOS ANGELES CITY COUNCIL DISTRICT 10 The Club voted to endorse at the November 6 membership meeting
Aura Vasquez
Los Angeles County, CA – The Heart of LA Democratic Club (HLADems), a Los Angeles County Democratic club which promotes equality and the full representation of women in local, state and national politics endorses Aura Vasquez for Los Angeles City Council District 10. The club voted to endorse Vasquez at the November 6th membership meeting. District 10 includes parts of South Los Angeles, Mid-City, and Koreatown. "We believe that Ms. Vasquez has the right combination of political savvy, mastery of the issues facing Los Angeles, and the passion for serving the district and its people, says HLADems president Lindsay Carlson. “She will be a formidable change agent who can win a seat on the City Council.” About the Endorsement Process HLA Dems Board and Endorsement committee interviewed candidates Aura Vasquez, Grace Yoo, Dallas Fowler, and Lily Larsen on November 3; Mark Ridley-Thomas and his staff did not respond after several attempts to make contact. Each candidate demonstrated a genuine interest in representing their community, and bringing real change to city government. After the interview and extensive deliberation however, the board unanimously voted to endorse Aura Vasquez. The HLA Dems membership then voted to endorse Aura Vasquez at the November 6 meeting. The vote exceeded the club’s 60% threshold. Of all 18 elected officials in the City of Los Angeles — mayor, city controller, city attorney and city council members — only two are women. HLADems believe that the time is now for the City of Los Angeles to catch up with its progressive values and recognize that representation matters. In a district that has more Democrats than Republicans, the key to winning will be voter turnout.
Aura Vasquez Aura Vasquez is a Colombian-born immigrant, community leader, renewable energy advisor and environmental justice advocate. She is the first Afro-Latina candidate to represent Los Angeles City Council District 10.Most recently, she served as a Commissioner with the Department of Water and Power, appointed by Mayor Eric Garcetti, and developed a reputation as a hard-worker who did her homework. Originally from Colombia, she began her long organizing career when she was 11 years old, in an area about which she is still passionate - environmental issues. She has been a strong supporter of efforts to establish a public bank, and earned the support of Revolution LA for her advocacy in that space. Heart of LA Democratic Club was impressed with her pragmatic approach to accomplishing progressive goals, and her commitment to intentional strategies to accomplish culture change in city departments - particularly, by tying funding to increased demographic diversity. HLA Dems believe that Ms. Vasquez’s commitment to accomplishing policy goals goes beyond transactional politics - which, in our view, we see far too much of in “deep blue” areas of Los Angeles - and we believe that she will stand up for bold ideas while maintaining the relationships needed to win hearts and minds.
About the Heart of LA Democratic Club Founded in March 2017 on the heels of the Presidential election, the Heart of L.A. Democratic Club is to help make the Democratic Party, the body politic and its elected officials responsive to, and responsible for, the needs of all people, particularly, though not exclusively, women in our community.
