As we watch in horror, the GOP is swiftly and cruelly dismantling women's reproductive rights. The war on women, equality and fundamental freedom is in full-swing.
With the outright total abortion ban in Alabama signed into law Wednesday, the abortion ban at 8 weeks passed in Missouri today, and the abortion ban at six weeks passed in Georgia this week, there are now a total of eight states that have passed bills this year to narrow women's reproductive rights. Overall, nearly 30 bans on abortion have been introduced, passed, or signed into law in statehouses around the country this year alone.
Recent bills in Idaho, North Dakota, South Dakota and Utah ban specific reproductive and abortion procedures. These are medical decisions that should be made between a woman and her doctor.
These laws are intended to pave a path to the Supreme Court, where anti-choice proponents dream of overturning Roe v Wade and criminalizing abortion care around the United States. When you criminalize abortion, lives are on the line. Gutting Roe means more women will die or be injured. And with a right-leaning Court, the reversal is not far-fetched. Women could lose our rights to safe and legal abortions.
Despite these terrifying attacks on our rights , Roe is more popular than ever. 7 in 10 Americans believe abortion should be safe and legal and have compassion for a woman making her own choices about when, how, and if to have a family. The patchwork of radical anti-choice legislation and bans on abortion at the state level has reached new heights of cruelty with Trump in the White House waging a massive disinformation campaign to mislead people about abortion and gin up his base.
Are you angry? You have good reason to be. But let's fight back! As Hillary Clinton said in a message Wednesday, "Women's rights are Human Rights. We will not go back."
