There Must Be Consequences: Remove Donald Trump Now
Heart of LA Democratic Club Statement on the attempted overthrow of our government
This week we witnessed two Americas. On Tuesday, we witnessed the America where record voter turnout driven by Black voters elected the first Black and Jewish Senators from the State of Georgia. These righteous victories for Senators-elect Reverend Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff - and the reclamation of the Senate majority, provide the Biden-Harris administration with a pathway to lift up the nation.
Then, on Wednesday, we witnessed the America where an angry mob of white supremacist terrorists and far-right vigilantes - directly incited by Donald Trump - brandished guns, MAGA hats, Nazi symbols and Confederate flags —and violently stormed the Capitol and attempted to overthrow the U.S. government and illegally install Trump to a second term.
We saw the mob violate the Capitol with almost unfettered access. We saw neo-Nazis live-stream from the Speaker’s Office and leisurely pose for photos. And we saw them walk out – unshackled - and later in the day, gather together to socialize in the lobbies at the high-end hotels where they were staying. Recent history proves that if these rioters were Black and Brown or Indigenous people, law enforcement would not have hesitated to use deadly force. In this America, white privilege was on wide display.
These acts of terrorism and sedition as Congress met to certify the results of a free and fair election were terrifying, deeply disturbing, but not at all surprising. The President has stoked his supporters’ resentment and grievances for four years through constant lies, manufactured outrage, and his dangerous and self-serving attempt to cling to power and burn down our very democracy. He lit the last match Wednesday morning - on LIVE TV - directing the extremists to march to the Capitol and “Stop the Steal” at any cost. Then we saw him return to the airwaves and tell the mob that he loves them.
The violent insurrection at the U.S. Capitol and the blood of five deaths are on the hands of Donald Trump. This political pyromaniac is a clear and present danger.
Donald Trump has betrayed his oath of office time and time again. He has shown that he is unfit to serve. He has proven a limitless capacity for wreaking havoc and inciting violence.
Donald Trump is a threat to our democracy and must be removed from office immediately.
We call on Congress to impeach and convict Donald Trump, remove him from office, and arrest him for treason and conspiring to overthrow the US government. It is crystal clear that Donald Trump did not incite this siege alone. He had the help of GOP allies, who worked to undermine the will of voters while fanning the flames of insurrection. In a despicable power grab, these seditiousRepublican members of Congress sought to silence the voices of Black people, immigrants, and communities of color, and over 80 million voters. They mustbe held accountable and expelled so we can preserve the fabric of our democracy.
Ultimately, the mob failed to stop the Electoral College certification and Joe Biden and Kamala Harris will be sworn in at noon on January 20.
But we must be vigilant and resolute. There must be consequences if our republic is to survive. Donald Trump needs to go NOW.
