About the Film: Sally Ride became the first American woman to blast off into space, but beneath her unflappable composure, she carried a secret. Revealing the romance and sacrifices of their 27 years together, Sally’s life partner, Tam O’Shaughnessy, tells the full story of this complicated and iconic astronaut for the first time. From National Geographic Documentary Films, SALLY is directed by Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Cristina Costantini. Lauren Cioffi is a documentary creative producer and a member of the Academy of Motion Pictures. She recently produced the HBO documentary series “Love Has Won: The Cult of Mothergod,” executive-produced by the Safdie brothers with their banner Elara Pictures, and she was a leading creative executive producer on the eight-part series “Pop Star Academy,” which premiered on Netflix in 2024 with Boardwalk Pictures. Her recent producing work also includes the Emmy-nominated feature documentary “Becoming” on Netflix, about former first lady Michelle Obama with Higher Ground Productions and director Nadia Hallgren. She produced renowned visual artist and filmmaker Garrett Bradley’s three-part documentary series “Naomi Osaka,” with SpringHill Entertainment for Netflix in 2021. Cioffi worked closely with filmmaker Liza Mandelup on their first award-winning feature documentary, “Jawline,” which premiered on Hulu to great acclaim. She produced the documentary feature “Civil” with Nadia Hallgren and executive producers Kenya Barris and Roger Ross Williams on Netflix in 2022. Her documentary short “After Maria” was shortlisted for an Academy Award® in 2019, and her nonfiction work has premiered at film festivals worldwide. Statement from Heart of LA Democratic Club on ICE Raids and Federal Deployment in Los Angeles
What we are witnessing right now in Los Angeles is a grave violation of human dignity and a direct assault on the values our communities hold dear. The recent ICE raids—targeting schools, workplaces, and neighborhoods—are nothing short of state-sponsored terror. Families are being torn apart. Children are being traumatized. And entire communities are living in fear.
We are outraged—by the images of children in handcuffs, by the violence inflicted on peaceful people, by the blatant disregard for human life and dignity. These actions are inhumane, unjust, and unacceptable. The deployment of the National Guard and federal agents has only escalated the trauma and fear, turning our neighborhoods into war zones rather than safe homes.
What is also troubling is the federal government’s persistent lies about what is happening here in Los Angeles. This administration falsely portrays our communities as dangerous and lawless, using these misleading claims to justify its brutal tactics and the unnecessary militarization of our streets. This is not about safety—it is about intimidation and control.
Los Angeles is a place of immigrants, workers, resilience, and hope. We stand united with our immigrant neighbors, friends, and families. We reject these false narratives and the violence inflicted in their name. We see the truth—and we will speak it loudly.
The Heart of LA Democratic Club stands in unwavering solidarity with all those being targeted. We are feminists. We are fighters. We believe in justice, dignity, equality, and the fundamental right of every person to live without fear.
To our community: please stay safe, stay peaceful, and stay connected. Do not give those in power the excuse they are seeking to escalate this violence. Our resistance must be grounded in care, courage, and unity. We also urge everyone to know your rights. The ACLU offers vital resources to protect immigrant communities and protesters—available in multiple languages.
Please share these widely and empower those around you. If you need physical red cards or access to translated materials, we will help connect you. This moment is painful and frightening—but it is not hopeless. Resilience is in our DNA. We understand how to fight. We will continue to organize. We will continue to protect one another. We will continue to fight for the soul of Los Angeles and our country—because they belong to all of us. In solidarity,
Founded in March 2017, the Heart of L.A. Democratic Club was created in recognition of the growing awareness within the Democratic Party that women are not but absolutely should be fully and equally represented in local, state, and national politics. The Heart of L.A. Democratic Club is open to all Democrats who subscribe to the club’s goals and purposes regardless of their gender identity.
The mission of the Heart of L.A. Democratic Club is to help make the Democratic Party and its elected officials responsive to, and responsible for, the needs of all people, particularly, though not exclusively, women in our community. In addition to endorsing candidates and organizing for those candidates, the Heart of L.A. Democratic Club actively participates in issues advocacy, community outreach, and voter education.
Our club’s monthly meetings feature guest speakers such as Democratic elected officials and candidates, and experts in policy areas of interest to women - including reproductive justice, homelessness, voter registration, immigration, criminal justice reform and more.

Abortion in the United States: Dobb's, Roe v. Wade, and What You Can Do Now June 24, 2023 marked one year since the Conservative right-wing Supreme Court's Dobbs decision that struck down Roe v Wade, denying abortion healthcare to millions of American women. Now nearly half of the states have some type of abortion bans. This has increased the burden on people, especially those with low incomes and from marginalized communities, to carry unwanted pregnancies to term.
