HEART OF LA DEMOCRATIC CLUB ENDORSES TUNUA THRASH-NTUK FOR LONG BEACH CITY COUNCIL 8th DISTRICT

Los Angeles County, CA – The Heart of LA Democratic Club (HLADems), a Los Angeles County Democratic club which promotes equality and the full representation of women in local, state and national politics, endorses Tunua Thrash-Ntuk for the Long Beach City Council’s 8th District. The 8th district, which is the most diverse in Long Beach, comprises the area of North Long Beach between South Street and Bixby Road. The club voted to endorse Thrash-Ntuk at the January 8, 2020 membership meeting. The seat is currently held by Councilman Al Austin. The primary election is set for March 3, 2020.
"Tunua Thrash-Ntuk proves that she is the right person to represent the people and the communities of the 8th district of Long Beach,” says Heart of LA president Lindsay Carlson. “We are impressed by her experience and focused ideas for her district and city, which include investing in public safety, housing and decreasing the number of people experiencing homelessness, and expanding economic opportunities for all. As an urban planning and housing expert, she has the skills and experience needed to improve District 8 neighborhoods and ensure that Long Beach’s economy includes everyone.”
Ms. Thrash-Ntuk’s plans include community revitalization and community engagement through investing in affordable housing and commercial development to ensure every part of Long Beach gets its fair share of resources. She will also concentrate on providing supportive housing and wrap-around services for people in Long Beach who are experiencing homelessness. She is committed to providing pathways of economic opportunity for employers, entrepreneurs, consumers, and citizens. Ms. Thrash-Ntuk has also received the endorsement of the Los Angeles County Democratic Party, State Senator Lena Gonzalez, and several unions. She raised a record-breaking $100,000 by summer 2019, all in contributions of $400 or less.
About the Endorsement Process: Tunua Thrash-Ntuk requested the club’s endorsement. Per club bylaws, we reached out to the only other registered Democrat in the race, Al Austin, and invited him to participate in the endorsement process. He declined to respond to our invitation. After filling out a detailed questionnaire, Thrush-Ntuk participated in a follow-up interview with the Board and endorsement committee, which included residents of the City of Long Beach. The Board voted to recommend to the general membership that Ms. Thrash-Ntuk receive the club’s endorsement.The HLA Dems membership then voted unanimously to endorse Ms. Thrash-Ntuk at the membership meeting on January 8, 2020. Tunua Thrash-Ntuk leads a local non-profit organization that helps transform underserved communities throughout the Los Angeles and Orange County regions. Under her leadership, the organization has financed and built thousands of affordable housing units, increased capital for small businesses, and advocated for smarter public policy around neighborhood revitalization.
In 2018, Ms. Thrash-Ntuk co-chaired the City of Long Beach’s "Everyone In" Economic Inclusion Policy Task Force, an initiative designed to provide economic inclusion recommendations to create a local economy that includes and benefits every Long Beach resident. She led the efforts to convene six months of policy roundtables with a multi-disciplinary team of experts such as Policy Link, resulting in the Long Beach City Council’s adoption of several recommendations. Thrush-Ntuk organized Long Beach’s first Economic Inclusion Summit in 2018 with more than 250 local community partners, business leaders, policymakers, and philanthropic partners for a day-long conversation that explored innovative policy solutions to address Long Beach's economic inequities. Tunua Thrash-Ntuk has a strong track record of serving her community as a board member or advisory board member to many organizations, including Housing California, Federal Home Loan Bank San Francisco’s Affordable Housing Council, City of LA Measure HHH Citizens Oversight Commission, Greenlining Institute, Union Bank’s Community Advisory Board, and Frontier Communications Community Advisory Board. She earned her Master’s in City Planning from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and her undergraduate degree from UC Berkeley.
Tunua Thrash-Ntuk has also served as her daughter’s Girl Scout Troop Leader, volunteers at the Alpert Jewish Community Center, and was crowned the 2019 Mrs. Long Beach. About the Heart of LA Democratic Club Founded in March 2017 on the heels of the Presidential election, the Heart of L.A. Democratic Club was created in recognition of the growing awareness within the Democratic Party that women should be fully and equally represented in local, state, and national politics.
