HEART OF LA DEMOCRATIC CLUB ENDORSES THE RE-ELECTION OF HILDA SOLIS FOR THE LOS ANGELES COUNTYBOARD OF SUPERVISORS, 1st DISTRICT
Los Angeles County, CA – At its February 28, 2018 meeting, the Heart of LA Democratic Club (HLADems), a new Los Angeles County-wide Democratic club which promotes equality and the full representation of women in local, state and national politics, voted to endorse for reelection Jeffrey Prang for Los Angeles County.
Hilda Solis has championed issues critical to women and low-income families at every level of government: local, state, and federal. In 1994 she became the first Hispanic woman to serve in the California State Senate, and in 2000 she was elected to serve in the Congress. When President Barack Obama appointed her to serve as Secretary of Labor shortly after he was elected, she became the first Latina to serve in a U.S. Cabinet.
During her eight years in Congress, Solis served as the co-chair of the Congressional Caucus for Women's Issues and was a member of the Bipartisan Pro-Choice Caucus. She helped pass the National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program Act and authored provisions of the Violence Against Women to provide grants for the promotion of domestic violence awareness in underserved communities.
As a Los Angeles County Supervisor, Solis has continued to advocate on behalf of the County’s women and girls, including but not limited to improving access to county services for victims of domestic violence by ensuring temporary housing, job training, and access to affordable childcare. In 2016, together with Supervisor Kuehl, Solis co-authored the LA County Women and Girls Initiative, a five-year program to address the unique disadvantages faced by LA County women and girls, with a particular focus on poverty.
About the Heart of LA Democratic Club Founded in March 2017 on the heels of the Presidential election, the Heart of L.A. Democratic Club was founded in recognition of the growing awareness within the Democratic Party that women should be fully and equally represented both in the political community and the national body politic. Heart of L.A. Democratic Club is open to all Democrats who subscribe to the club’s goals and purposes regardless of their gender identity. The mission of the Heart of L.A. Democratic Club is to help make the Democratic Party, the body politic and its elected officials responsive to, and responsible for, the needs of all people, particularly, though not exclusively, women in our community. In addition to endorsements, HLADems actively participate in political advocacy, as well as voter and community outreach. Monthly meetings feature guest speakers who include Democratic candidates, experts on policy and political processes, reproductive justice, homelessness, and more.
