HEART OF LA DEMOCRATIC CLUB ENDORSES SARAH KATE LEVY FOR LOS ANGELES CITY COUNCIL DISTRICT 4
Sarah Kate Levy
Los Angeles County, CA – The Heart of LA Democratic Club (HLADems), a Los Angeles County Democratic club which promotes equality and the full representation of women in local, state and national politics endorses Sarah Kate Levy for Los Angeles City Council District 4. The club voted to endorse Levy at the October 2 membership meeting. The primary election is set for March 3, 2020. District 4 extends into Koreatown and Mid-Wilshire on the south; through the Miracle Mile, Fairfax District, and Hollywood Hills into Sherman Oaks on the west; through much of Hollywood and over Cahuenga Pass into North Hollywood on the north; and through Los Feliz and Griffith Park into much of Silver Lake on the east. It has been represented by Councilmember David Ryu since 2015.
"Sarah Kate Levy has an impressive track record as a political activist supporting causes that are important to Los Angeles residents, and has made a point in focusing her platform on lifting up women and families,” says Heart of LA president Lindsay Carlson. “Moreover, she has proven that she has taken the time to thoroughly understand the issues that are uniquely important to the people who live and work in District 4, as well as how those issues intersect with the city of Los Angeles as a whole. She has demonstrated a passion for getting to know residents and their concerns, and we believe that this will translate to a high level of constituent service.” In her written responses and in her interview, she demonstrated to the Heart of LA Board that she is well-prepared and understands politics as well as policy, including the scale of this particular race. She has done the homework and the legwork it takes to run a successful insurgent campaign, and HLADems expects her to bring that diligence to the Council, if elected.
Apart from Ms. Levy’s qualifications to represent the District, the HLADems believe that it is time for more women to hold offices in the City of Los Angeles, and this is a perfect opportunity to make that happen right now. Of all 18 elected officials in the City of Los Angeles — mayor, city controller, city attorney and city council members — only two are women. The time is now for the City of Los Angeles to catch up with its progressive values and recognize that representation matters.
About the Endorsement Process: HLA Dems Board and Endorsement committee considered current District 4 Concilmember David Ryu, Sarah Kate Levy, and Nithya Raman. All three candidates filled out a detailed questionnaire and participated in a follow up interview with the Board and endorsement committee. The Board interviewed Nithya Raman and Sarah Kate Levy in person, and David Ryu by phone. Although each candidate demonstrated unique strengths that will serve them well in their respective bids for this seat, the Board voted unanimously, after extensive deliberation, to recommend Sarah Kate Levy for endorsement. The HLA Dems membership then voted to endorse Sara Kate Levy at the September 2 meeting. The vote exceeded the club’s 60% threshold. Sarah Kate Levy is a writer and advocate. As President of the National Women's Political Caucus, LA Metro, Sarah Kate helps recruit, train, and elect pro-choice, pro-ERA women to local, state, and federal seats. She volunteers with the Planned Parenthood Advocacy Project, as well as several local activist groups, and is a member of the Heart of LA Democratic Club, Democrats for Neighborhood Action, Stonewall Democrats, and several other clubs. Sarah Kate also serves on the Los Angeles Library Foundation board. She lives in Hollywood with her husband and their four children.
Levy has put affordable housing, homelessness, safe streets, robust transit, trees and green space and other quality of life issues at the top of her platform.
