HEART OF LA DEMOCRATIC CLUB ENDORSES SENATOR DIANNE FEINSTEIN FOR REELECTION
Los Angeles County, CA– At its April 25, 2018 meeting, the Heart of LA Democratic Club (HLADems), a year-old Los Angeles County-wide Democratic club which promotes equality and the full representation of women in local, state and national politics, voted to endorse Senator Dianne Feinstein for reelection.
“We believe that Senator Feinstein is the most capable and accomplished candidate to represent California in Washington DC during these especially challenging times,” says HLADems president Lindsay Carlson. “Her legacy can be felt across countless areas in the political arena: from her lifelong fight for women’s rights and for pay equity, to the makeup of the federal judiciary, to national security, to the fight against LGBTQ and HIV/AIDS discrimination, to her tireless leadership on gun control. We support Senator Feinstein and we are proud to endorse her.”
Senator Dianne Feinstein has been at the forefront of the advancement of women in government and politics, and has been a “first” to hold various positions throughout her career – including the first woman President of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, the first woman mayor of San Francisco, the first woman elected Senator of California, and the first woman to serve on the Senate Judiciary Committee, later becoming the first woman to chair it.
Beyond her past accomplishments, HLADems are inspired by Senator Feinstein’s leadership on issues that are important to families today. Close to home, she has taken on the homelessness crisis, an issue that impacts communities across the United States, but is especially acute in Los Angeles County, where women and families are the fastest growing segment of the homeless population. Senator Feinstein’s work with local leaders and efforts to appropriate federal funds for homelessness services in California have the potential to drastically improve the lives of women and children who are experiencing homelessness. Senator Feinstein continues her fight against gender discrimination and speaks passionately about her desire to see that the Equal Rights Amendment is added to the U.S. Constitution. She is working to end gender wage disparity, which particularly affects Hispanic and African-American women. She co-sponsored the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act to protect against pay discrimination and is working with other Democratic women of the Senate to pass the “Paycheck Fairness Act,” which would amend the Equal Pay Act and help close the wage gap by breaking harmful patterns of pay discrimination while strengthening workplace protections.
Furthermore, Senator Feinstein has demonstrated remarkable leadership during the “Me Too” movement. In response to reports of decades of abuse of American female gymnasts by Dr. Larry Nassar, Feinstein worked closely with the gymnasts to advance legislation that requires amateur athletic organizations to report allegations of sexual abuse to authorities within 24 hours. The legislation was signed into law in February 2018.
Finally, Senator Feinstein’s leadership on gun control is decades long. She introduced the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban (sunsetted during the Bush administration), and she is now pushing for a new assault weapons bill to ban the sale, transfer, manufacture and importation of military-style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines.
Says Lindsay Carlson, “Heart of LA Democratic Club hopes that the Democratic party will take back control of Congress in 2018, and the Club is working very hard to help achieve that goal. But we recognize that the government is very likely to continue to be divided for the foreseeable future. We need an experienced lawmaker like Dianne Feinstein fighting for us.”
About the Heart of LA Democratic Club Founded in March 2017 on the heels of the Presidential election, the Heart of L.A. Democratic Club was founded in recognition of the growing awareness within the Democratic Party that women should be fully and equally represented both in the political community and the national body politic. Heart of L.A. Democratic Club is open to all Democrats who subscribe to the club’s goals and purposes regardless of their gender identity. The mission of the Heart of L.A. Democratic Club is to help make the Democratic Party, the body politic and its elected officials responsive to, and responsible for, the needs of all people, particularly, though not exclusively, women in our community. In addition to endorsements, HLADems actively participate in political advocacy, as well as voter and community outreach.
