HEART OF LA DEMOCRATIC CLUB STATEMENT ON INTERNATIONAL WORKERS DAY, MAY DAY 2020
Heart of LA Democratic Club recognizes the 30 million unemployed Americans, as well as the tens of millions of Americans who have faced economic losses, on International Workers’ Day. The COVID-19 crisis has made the need to address workers' rights and the erosion of collective bargaining all the more urgent.
We stand with the front-line healthcare workers, many of whom have faced this pandemic without the proper protective equipment and supplies. We stand with the grocery workers, the agricultural workers, the transportation workers, the first responders, the delivery workers, the domestic service workers, the teachers, and the parents who are struggling to provide for their families and educate their children during the COVID-19 pandemic. We stand with all of our sisters and brothers in all areas of labor as our current crisis makes plain our urgent national need to decouple health care access and cost from employment.
Let May Day of 2020 be the call to action to honor our essential workers with fair and living wages, benefits, dignity, and let all people of conscience stand shoulder to shoulder with all who bear the heaviest burdens. Our coalitions and our unions are our strength, in 2020 and beyond.
About the Heart of LA Democratic Club Founded in March 2017 on the heels of the Presidential election, the Heart of L.A. Democratic Club was created in recognition of the growing awareness within the Democratic Party that women should be fully and equally represented in local, state, and national politics. The Heart of L.A. Democratic Club is open to all Democrats who subscribe to the club’s goals and purposes regardless of their gender identity. The mission of the Heart of L.A. Democratic Club is to help make the Democratic Party and its elected officials responsive to, and responsible for, the needs of all people, particularly, though not exclusively, women in our community. In addition to endorsing candidates and organizing for those candidates, the Heart of L.A. Democratic Club actively participates in issues advocacy, community outreach, and voter education. The Club’s monthly meetings feature guest speakers such as Democratic elected officials and candidates, and experts in policy areas of interest to women - including reproductive justice, homelessness, voter registration, immigration, criminal justice reform and more.
