Statement from Heart of LA Democratic Club about the Violent Mass Shooting at Brown University

The Heart of LA Democratic Club expresses our deepest sympathies and condolences to the Brown University community following the tragic and senseless act of violence on campus on Saturday, December 13. We mourn the loss of life and share the grief of the family, friends, and loved ones who will live with this pain.

We also hold those who were injured or traumatized in our hearts, knowing that their lives have been forever changed.

Violence involving firearms continues to devastate families and communities across this country. According to the Gun Violence Archive, there have been nearly 400 mass shootings in the United States so far this year. College campuses, like schools and public spaces, should be places of learning, safety, and connection, not fear. Our nation should not accept gun violence as inevitable or normal. The loss of life demands more than thoughts and prayers. It demands action.

We cannot let this cycle of violence go unchecked. We will not sit back complacently and wait for the next tragedy. We will continue to hold our leaders accountable and to work for solutions that prioritize human life, community safety, and prevention.

Acts of gun violence reverberate far beyond where they occur. They affect students, families, educators, and communities across the nation, deepening fear and grief and eroding our collective sense of safety. We stand with the Brown University community during this time of mourning and honor the life lost by recommitting ourselves to change.

Silence in the face of violence is not an option.
